Tools
Risk analysis, competitive analysis, and SWOT analysis are essential tools that producers utilize throughout every stage of the production cycle. During a previous project, I developed detailed documentation for each of these analyses based on a fictional game project.

In my risk analysis documentation, I focused on pre-production, asking and answering what the risks would be to develop a class-based arena PvP game. Identifying these risks early on is an essential part of the pre-production phase, as well as something you want to constantly be iterating on. Many things can impact a project in its development cycle, and identifying mitigation strategies is crucial to keeping the project alive.

In my competitive analysis documentation, I continued with the same style of game and looked to identify potential competitors to the game I had in mind. Market trends, player expectations, and feature sets can all impact a project’s direction, and understanding where your game fits in is crucial to making informed design and marketing decisions.

For my SWOT analysis, I stuck with the same game concept and took a close look at its strengths and weaknesses, along with the opportunities and threats it might face in the market. Doing this early on helps the development team think more realistically about the project and where it could go. It gives the development teams a clear view on ways to fill in the gaps that other games might not have been able to, identify key downfalls of other games to avoid, and what your potential bottlenecks might be whether its technological limitations or scope of the project.
