MindShift - Level Designer
MindShift is a puzzle-platformer game I've been working on with a small team. I am a level designer and am responsible for creating levels which included puzzles that focused on creative problem-solving, intuitive mechanics, and player discovery.
The level creation process generally began with creating a rough paper map to lay out what hazards, interactable objects, and obstacles we wanted to include in that level. The main challenge at this stage was coming up with puzzles that were difficult enough for the player to really make them think about how to get from point A to B utilizing the different objects we gave to them.
However, I was responsible for creating the tutorial level for our game. We really wanted the player to learn by doing and avoid as much text on screen as possible, so a lot of the beginning puzzles are extremely simple and that is intentional. We aimed to introduce every interactable object and hazard in a safe, low-risk environment where players couldn’t fail or die initially. Once they became familiar with how each element worked, we gradually increased the challenge and introduced consequences to their actions.
Here is a video showcase of the level I worked on. It shows off the first level in our game and also functions as the tutorial where players are introduced to our objects, hazards, and interactable.
